Chapter Eleven

“I’m glad you called me and asked to have lunch,” Detective Lucas leaned over and gave Marjory a very warm smile that sent a strange tingle from somewhere in her belly all the way to her toes.

It was lunch. That was it. And it wasn’t even some kind of date. It was more than that. Or less. Marjory could not decide. But he had agreed to meet her at the local Wilberfourth Diner after only a short text asking if they could have a quick chat. Marjory had been almost certain when he had agreed to meet her that it was likely because he thought she had some earth-shattering news about the case of the “spicy” baggies. The fact that he was flashing around all of those sexy smiles made her wonder otherwise.

“Hey there, Miss Marjory! I didn’t see a takeaway order for you back there in the kitchen. Did I miss it?” Karen Killian was a witch who had been a year behind Marjory in school. She was a likable woman with a husband and three budding witchkind children. Marjory liked Karen. And it wasn’t just because Marjory spent a good deal of time sitting at the lunch counter at the diner either.

“Actually, I’m going to eat in today.” Marjory tried like hell not to blush, but she could feel the telltale scarlet creeping up from her collar toward her cheeks. “Detective Lucas and I thought it would be nice to sit and chat someplace warm and dry.”

“No doubt!” Karen gushed. She at least seemed to be willing to forego any comments about how unusual it was for Marjory and the detective to be sharing a meal. “All of this rain! The kids are driving me nuts. I keep bundling them up in rain jackets and boots and sending them outside to splash around. So, I’ll probably be stopping by the shop to get some of your famous sore throat remedy soon enough!”

Marjory chuckled. “‘Tis the season to sell lots of cold symptom fixers. That’s my bread and butter this time of year.”

“I bet,” Karen agreed with a snort. She looked from Marjory to Ryan Lucas and back. “The usual for both of you, then?”

Ryan was already nodding. “Sounds good enough to me. How about you, Marjory?”

“Yup. Just bring me an iced tea too, if you wouldn’t mind.”

“And you, Detective?” Karen raised a brow at Ryan.

He seemed to be struggling with that seemingly simple decision. “Ah, just double that. Iced tea.”

“Coming right up!” Karen hustled off.

The diner’s lunch counter was an L shape. Behind the counter, the dining room of the corner unit of the town square’s north side was also L shaped. The diner had been around for a very long time, but it was well kept. The owners were civvies and had been local here to Wilberfourth for long enough that they were very well versed in the supernatural. Well versed enough to hire a witch or a warlock when they needed some magic to happen with the upkeep of their restaurant.
